Ts. Tan Chee Wai, CEO, HANDD Business Solutions

HANDD Business Solutions (HANDD) was established in the UK in 2006 and has maintained a presence in Malaysia since 2020. HANDD’s vision is driven by a passion for simplifying the delivery of data security. Our mission is to safeguard organisational data, mitigate technology adoption risks, and accelerate compliance with data security regulations.

HANDD Malaysia, incorporated in 2020 as the Malaysian headquarters, aims to replicate the success achieved in the UK and expand operations across the APAC region. Today, HANDD operates globally, serving over 1,000 customers in 27 countries. These include major players in finance, insurance, manufacturing, healthcare, and the public sector.

In Malaysia, the business specialises in Managed File Transfer products. With over a decade of experience working with some of the largest organisations in the region, we ensure the security of organisational data throughout its lifecycle by offering managed and professional services, consulting, and cutting-edge technology.

What are some of your organisation’s proudest moments/milestones in Malaysia?

Following our success, HANDD expanded its operations from Malaysia to the wider APAC region. This includes key markets such as Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, China, and South Korea, showcasing our commitment to growth and regional impact.

HANDD successfully secured a contract with one of the largest oil and gas companies in Malaysia within six months of incorporation, demonstrating our ability to quickly establish trust and deliver value in a competitive industry.

In September 2024, HANDD was awarded Malaysia Digital Status by MDEC. This prestigious recognition highlights HANDD’s significant business growth in Malaysia and its active participation in Malaysia Digital’s initiatives.

Furthermore, HANDD proudly participated in the 25th JPA-BMCC Management Development Programme 2024. Through this programme, HANDD collaborated with two senior directors from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) and the Jabatan Digital Negara. These leaders worked with HANDD Malaysia and HANDD UK, facilitating an invaluable exchange of cybersecurity knowledge and insights on its application in both the private and public sectors.

Based on your overall experience of doing business in Malaysia, name the advantages and challenges of doing business in Malaysia.

Malaysia offers several advantages for businesses, including its strategic location in Southeast Asia, well-connected infrastructure, a diverse and skilled talent pool, and a business-friendly regulatory environment, making it an attractive destination for global expansion. However, challenges persist, such as navigating complex procurement processes, regulatory requirements, and addressing awareness gaps about the critical importance of data security and advanced cybersecurity solutions in certain sectors, which require ongoing education and collaboration with local stakeholders.

What did you do or are still doing to overcome these challenges?

To overcome these challenges, we focus on continuous education and awareness campaigns, demonstrating the value of secure data management to potential clients through targeted campaigns, webinars, and direct engagement with key decision-makers. We also collaborate actively with regulatory bodies and industry partners, ensuring our solutions align with local compliance standards, while investing in local partnerships and talent development to meet market expectations and regulatory requirements.

How has your business evolved during this pandemic, especially in terms of optimisation of human and technology resources?

The pandemic has significantly shaped the way businesses operate, and at HANDD, we have embraced these changes to optimise both human and technological resources. Thanks to the widespread adoption of technology, online meetings and hybrid working models have become the new norm for technology companies. This shift has not only ensured continuity during challenging times but has also brought about long-term efficiencies in the way we operate.

Before the pandemic, many of our customers, particularly in Malaysia and across the APAC region, preferred in-person meetings. While these were valuable for building relationships, they often required significant time and resources due to extensive travel. The adoption of virtual meeting platforms has transformed this dynamic. Our customers are now comfortable with online meetings, which has led to a considerable reduction in travel-related time and costs. This change has allowed us to focus more on delivering quality services and solutions, ultimately enhancing our operational efficiency.

The hybrid working model has also enabled us to optimise our human resources. By providing employees with the flexibility to work remotely while maintaining structured in-office collaboration, we have created an environment that fosters productivity, adaptability, and work-life balance. This approach has helped us maintain high levels of employee engagement and performance during a period of uncertainty.

Moreover, the pandemic has accelerated the adoption of digital tools and technologies within our organisation. This evolution in our operations has not only addressed the immediate challenges posed by the pandemic but has also positioned HANDD for sustained growth and innovation in the future.

How do you see your business growth and prospects in Malaysia now?

We are optimistic about the growth and future prospects of our business in Malaysia. HANDD is committed to continuing the expansion and development of its revenue streams within the country, leveraging the region’s dynamic market and its strategic importance in the APAC region. With Malaysia’s cost-effective business environment, skilled workforce, and growing demand for cybersecurity and data management solutions, we believe there is significant potential for sustained growth.

By consolidating key functions and resources in Malaysia, we aim to optimise our service delivery, strengthen customer relationships, and maintain a competitive edge in the industry.

To align with this direction, HANDD is rapidly growing its team size in Malaysia. We are actively investing in recruiting and retaining top talent, as well as providing opportunities for professional development and advancement. This growth strategy reflects our confidence in Malaysia’s business environment and our long-term commitment to the region.

Looking ahead, HANDD remains focused on driving innovation, expanding its client base, and building a resilient, forward-looking organisation that continues to deliver value to businesses across Malaysia and the broader APAC region.

What are the top 3 reasons for your organisation joining the BMCC?

We joined the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) for three key reasons. First, we wanted to connect with a dynamic network of British and Malaysian businesses to build strategic partnerships and foster collaboration. Second, BMCC’s strong ties with government ministries and agencies provide us with smoother interactions and access to valuable resources. Lastly, being a part of BMCC enhances our brand visibility and credibility, positioning us as a trusted player in the business community.
