BMCC attends National Climate Governance Summit 2025

A recent dialogue on climate governance and innovation brought together key stakeholders from both global and Malaysian sustainability ecosystems. Among the participants were Dr. Gary Theiserra, Council Chair of Climate Governance Malaysia; Emily Farnworth, Co-Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Climate and Nature Governance Global Futures Council and Executive Director of the Climate Governance Initiative (CGI); Rosie Ward, Manager of Community Engagement at CGI; and delegates from the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC), including Dr. Shubhabrata Samantaray, Founder and CEO of ENHEROES Global Energy, Ts. Dr. Rames Sivadasan, Head of Corporate Sustainability at SP Setia, and Pn. Lindayani Tajudin, SP Setia’s Chief Strategy Officer, who joined midway through the session.

The conversation centred around strengthening climate governance in Asia, with a strong focus on Sustainable Development Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities. Dr. Shubhabrata opened the session by highlighting the BMCC’s commitment to the clean energy transition and introduced the concept of self-sustaining private smart cities. He proposed an integrated approach combining nuclear technology with nature-based solutions like urban forestry to create climate-conscious, affordable urban spaces. He also emphasised the catalytic role of advance market commitments in accelerating decarbonisation by establishing purchase guarantees for emerging climate technologies.

Dr. Gary Theiserra built on this by sharing key insights from his masterclass on the science of climate change, stressing the importance of evidence-based strategies. Emily Farnworth pointed to the work of CGI and C40 Cities in advancing sustainable infrastructure across Asia, while Rosie Ward underlined the importance of responsible community ownership in building resilient, low-carbon cities. Adding to the discussion, Pn. Lindayani addressed the systemic barriers that often hinder multistakeholder collaboration and reinforced the importance of sustainable construction practices in driving the region’s clean industrial revolution.

The session concluded with a shared recognition of the urgent need for innovative, inclusive, and practical approaches to climate governance that align people, planet, and prosperity.
