Shaping Sustainable Cities: A Fireside Chat with the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur

On 23 September, we were honoured to host YBhg. Dato’ Seri TPr (Dr.) Maimunah binti Mohd Sharif, the 15th Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, as our distinguished speaker in a dialogue session titled “Shaping a Sustainable City: A Conversation with the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur”, held at Menara IQ, TRX.

This BMCC Government Dialogue Series, an initiative by the BMCC’s Built Environment Committee, saw an amazing turnout of BMCC members and partners, all eager to engage in meaningful discussions on building a more sustainable and liveable Kuala Lumpur.

The session, moderated by Martin Haeger MBE, Chair of BMCC’s Built Environment Committee and Director of HL Design, provided an ideal platform for the Mayor to share insights into Kuala Lumpur’s sustainable and inclusive development trajectory. Discussions touched on heritage conservation and urban renewal, repurposing old buildings for affordable housing, strengthening public transport and electric vehicle networks, and harnessing digital and data-driven strategies for smart city development.

The Mayor also underscored the need to build resilience against climate risks through green infrastructure, the development of a 254-kilometre blue-green network, and ensuring 20 square metres of green space per resident. All of this is guided by the comprehensive Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 (PTKL2040).

Chiefly, the Mayor called for greater support from the private sector, highlighting that the progressive transformation of Kuala Lumpur cannot be achieved by DBKL alone. She urged businesses to partner with government, civil society, and international stakeholders under the 4P principle (Public, Private, People, Partnership) to create a city that is sustainable, liveable, and loved by its people.

The BMCC extends our sincere thanks and appreciation to the Mayor for her time and for sharing her vision with BMCC members. BMCC Members who are interested in supporting the Mayor’s initiatives may connect with her office through BMCC by reaching out to Nicole@bmcc.org.my
