Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) is a pioneering international campus of Newcastle University, UK, established in EduCity, Iskandar Puteri, Johor, in 2011. As the first foreign university to anchor itself in EduCity, NUMed represents a cornerstone of transnational education in the region. We deliver globally recognised medical and biomedical programmes, maintaining the exact same rigorous academic standards, curriculum, and quality assurance as our UK home campus. What are some of your organisation’s proudest moments/milestones in Malaysia?

Our proudest milestones center on the real-world impact of our alumni: the successful graduation of multiple cohorts of medical doctors and biomedical scientists who are now actively elevating healthcare standards across the globe. We take immense pride in our unyielding academic outcomes and dual professional recognition, having secured vital approvals from key regulatory bodies such as the UK’s General Medical Council (GMC) and the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).

Furthermore, our deepening collaborations with local healthcare institutions and our ongoing, strategic investments in advanced campus facilities and research capabilities mark significant strides in our commitment to Malaysia. Another milestones is the award of Queen Anniversary Prize to Newcastle University for our work in Water Security in 2023, to which NUMed colleagues contributed to a lot.

Describe your operations and total investments in Malaysia (value, staff strength, etc.) to date.

NUMed represents a substantial, long-term strategic investment by Newcastle University into Malaysia, physically embodied by our purpose-built, 13-acre campus in EduCity. Our core operations revolve around premium undergraduate education in medicine and biomedical sciences, driven by a rapidly growing, highly skilled academic and professional workforce. However, our investment extends far beyond physical infrastructure; we have invested heavily in local talent development, cross-border research initiatives, and strategic partnerships that actively enrich Malaysia’s broader healthcare and educational ecosystems.

Based on your overall experience of doing business in Malaysia, name the advantages and challenges of doing business in Malaysia.

Advantages: Malaysia offers a highly strategic geographical location, robust government support for foreign direct investment, and a rich, diverse talent pool. Crucially, the nation’s clear ambition to position itself as a premier regional education hub aligns perfectly with our transnational education goals.

Challenges: Operating a foreign branch campus requires carefully navigating complex local regulatory frameworks and ensuring absolute alignment with evolving national professional accreditation requirements (both UK and Malaysia), all while rigorously maintaining the exact academic standards of our UK campus within a distinctly different operating environment. This is a common challenge for all Transnational Education operators across the globe.

What did you do or are still doing to overcome these challenges?

Our approach is rooted in proactive stakeholder engagement and strong, transparent governance. We work hand-in-hand with local authorities, regulatory bodies, and industry partners to ensure strict compliance and alignment with Malaysia’s national healthcare priorities. By leveraging the deep academic expertise of our UK campus alongside continuous local dialogue, we maintain our quality benchmarks seamlessly. Additionally, we are deeply committed to investing in local partnerships—particularly with regional healthcare providers—to secure and enhance robust clinical training and research opportunities for our students.
