Climate and Sustainable City Development Sharing Session with C40 Cities
The British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) recently hosted a sharing session titled “Climate and Sustainable City Development”, led by Huey Y. Yoong, Head of Implementation – East, Southeast Asia & Oceania (ESEAO), C40 Cities.
Organised by our Built Environment Committee, the session brought together industry leaders and experts to gain insights into the UCAP Climate Action Implementation Programme, a recent initiative undertaken by C40 Cities in collaboration with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). Members received the opportunity to in learn more about the energy efficiency and infrastructure initiatives being implemented through the programme, as well as the practical approaches cities are taking to advance climate action.
The session highlighted how the programme supports cities in moving from climate commitments to implementation through technical assistance, capacity building, stakeholder engagement, and policy support. The session also explored case studies from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Jakarta, Indonesia; and Quezon City, Philippines, showcasing how cities across the region are accelerating their sustainability agendas.
A key focus of the discussion was the role of buildings in addressing climate change. As one of the largest sources of urban emissions, buildings present significant opportunities for decarbonisation while improving energy performance, resilience, and overall quality of life. The experiences shared by Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, and Quezon City demonstrated that successful building decarbonisation is achievable when policy, technical expertise, financing, and stakeholder collaboration are aligned.
Beyond the presentations, the intimate session provided a valuable platform for exchanging best practices, strengthening engagement between C40 Cities and industry stakeholders, and exploring potential opportunities for future collaboration.
The session concluded with a networking opportunity, allowing attendees to continue conversations and build connections with fellow professionals.
